Saint Joseph was the husband of Mary. Saint Joseph with the Christ Child was a popular subject as St Joseph was the patron saint of families.
The Californian Mission St Jose in Fremont was named for him as was the city of San Jose in Santa Clara County, California
There are some losses of gold to the frame and rust and pock-marks on the painting.
