About our speaker:

Angela Howard is the wife of the late David Sanctuary Howard: dealer, lecturer and author of Chinese Armorial Porcelain, China for the West and other standard references on Chinese Export Porcelain. She joined the company 25 years ago, and continues to run Heirloom and Howard, which specializes in Chinese export armorial porcelain, from their home in Wiltshire, England

About the talk:

This lecture will explain how to "read a coat of arms" on porcelain. Although it will be illustrated largely through the medium of Chinese porcelain, the same principles can be applied to English porcelain, Silver or to any other decorative armorial object. It will explain what makes up an achievement of arms; how to recognize the difference between various types of armorials and using that information to date the porcelain; and how misunderstandings could occasionally arise in the transfer of orders between England and China. It will also show how to distinguish between genuine coats of arms, pseudo armorials, later replacements and modern fakes.

Next meeting: Sunday, 16th November 2008. Maureen Cassidy-Geiger, Curator, the Arnhold Collection Dresden / New York. Meissen Porcelain for the French Market : the influence and input of the Marchands-Merciers ca. 1728 - 1756
